WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity. Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Philippians 4: 10-13

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near.

Hebrews 10:23-25

"MANY PEOPLE ARE LONELY BECAUSE THEY BUILD WALLS INSTEAD OF BRIDGES."

This quote is from Our Daily Bread - January, 2001 Issue.

CROCHET STITCH, TECHNIQUE or TIP

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

If you know of any stitch I have omitted from our basics pages please drop me a line.

CROCHET STITCH/TECHNIQUE:

AFGHAN STITCH

Also known as Tunisian crochet. Special hooks are used that are much longer than ordinary hooks to make room for the large number of stitches. It is very important to check the number of stitches on the hook at the end of each row from right to left, because it is very easy to sk the last st at the end of the row.
NOTE: The right side of the work is always facing you.
Step 1: Make a base chain with the required number of stitches (no extra turning chain). Insert hook in 2nd ch from hk and draw through a lp. Leave this lp on the hook. Pull a lp through each ch, leaving them on the hk, to the end of the row.

Step 2: Work the return row from left to right. Do not turn the work. YO and draw lp through the first lp on the hk. YO and draw lp through the next 2 lps on the hook. Continue drawing through 2 lps to end of row. ~Return Row~

Step 3: Do not turn the work. Work from right to left. Skip the first vertical lp formed at the edge of the work in previous row. Insert hk from right to left behind the next vertical lp. Yo and draw yarn through the vertical lp. Leave this lp on hook. Continue in this way to end. make sure you do not sk the last vertical lp on left-handed side of work.

Repeat Steps 2 & 3 till project is desired length.

VIEWER TIP

Hi, Folks,

Instead of making a chain circle then crocheting into it to start.
It is much wiser for me to wrap the yarn or thread around two fingers and
crochet into the resulting circle. Then I can pull the end and the little
circle in the middle miraculously reduces itself to total insignificance.
Try it. My Aunt Chetti did it this way, and its a much more
"finished-looking" beginning. Email me with questions if the are any
after you try it.
Enjoy! Brenda in AZ

Hanging Dish Towel & Dishcloth

I just wanted to let you know that I love this pattern! I found it a couple of months ago, and tried it. It is one of
the first things I ever made (in 25 years) that was not an afghan! Thanks!

My reply:

Hi Eleanor:

Yes, I do know Jesus.
I'm in Hazard, Kentucky where it has snowed for the last few days. Only about 3-4 inches of accumulation but a skiff of snow keeps me housebound :o) So I've been house cleaning and answering email. I hope to catch up with everything soon so I can sit down, relax and do a little crocheting.
Happy New Year!

Lisa

Thanks for the pattern. I modified this one a bit, added more to the back area and added a belt for looks. I also added a trim in grey to fancy it up a bit. Rascal is part lhapso apso and so has alot of hair in the face area so I crocheted a matching scrunchie!! Isn't she adorable? She runs and tries to jump into her sweater when she sees it. I have enclosed a picture which you may put on your web page if you want to.
Thanks again, I did have a book with a pattern but cannot locate it after moving so you were a great help, our weather here has been -8C lately and she really loves the sweater!!
We live in British Columbia, Canada.
Sincerely, Val Starchuk and "Rascal".

HUMOR

Age is strictly a case of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

TOO ROUGH
A little girl asked her mother, "Can I go outside and play with the boys?" Her mother replied, "No, you can't play with the boys, they're too rough." The little girl thought about it for a few moments and asked, "If I can find a smooth one, can I play with him?"

Where Have All The Grammas Gone?

In the dim and distant past,
When life's tempo wasn't so fast,
Grandma used to rock and knit,
Crochet, tat and baby sit.
When the kids were in a jam,
They could always call on Gram.

But today she's in the gym
Exercising to keep slim.
She's checking the web or surfing the net,
Sending some E-mail, you bet.
Nothing seems to stop or block her,
Now that Grandma's off her rocker.

Everybody Knows Bubba!

Bubba was bragging to his boss one day, "You know, I
know everyone there is to know. Just name someone, anyone,
and I know them."

Tired of his boasting, his boss called his bluff, "OK,
Bubba how about Tom Cruise?"

"Sure, yes, Tom and I are old friends, and I can prove
it. " So Bubba and his boss fly out to Hollywood and knock
on Tom Cruise's door, and sure enough, Tom Cruise, shouts,
"Bubba! Great to see you! You and your friend come right
in and join me for lunch! "

Although impressed, Bubba's boss is still skeptical. After
they leave Cruise's house, he tells Bubba that he thinks
Bubba's knowing Cruise was just lucky.

"No, no, just name anyone else," Bubba says.

"President Clinton," his boss quickly retorts.

"Yes," Bubba says, "I know him, let's fly out to Washington."

And off they go. At the White House, Clinton spots Bubba
on the tour and motions him and his boss over, saying,
"Bubba, what a surprise, I was just on my way to a meeting,
but you and your friend come on in and let's have a cup of
coffee first and catch up." Well, the boss is very shaken
by now, but still not totally convinced.

After they leave the White house grounds, he expresses his
doubts to Bubba, who again implores him to name anyone else.

"The Pope," his boss replies. "Sure!" says Bubba.

"My folks are from Poland, and I've known the Pope a long
time."

So off they fly to Rome. Bubba and his boss are assembled
with the masses in Vatican Square when Bubba says, "This
will never work. I can't catch the Pope's eye among all these
people. Tell you what, I know all the guards so let me just
go upstairs and I'll come out on the balcony with the Pope."
And he disappears into the crowd headed toward the Vatican.
Sure enough, half an hour later Bubba emerges with the Pope
on the balcony. But by the time Bubba returns, he finds that
his boss has had a heart attack and is surrounded by paramedics.

Working his way to his boss' side, Bubba asks him, "What happened?"
His boss looks up and says, "I was doing fine until you
and the Pope came out on the balcony and the man next to me
said, "Who's that on the balcony with Bubba?"

"I think Grandma needs new glasses."
"What makes you say that, Son?"
"She's been watching two pairs of Father's trousers going
around in the washing machine and thinks she's watching a
wrestling match on TV."

Why Ain't He Got Horns?

"Sir," she inquired, "Why doesn't this cow have any horns?" The farmer
cocked his head for a moment, then began in a patient tone: "Well,
ma'am, cattle can do a powerful lot of damage with horns. Sometimes
we keep'em trimmed down with a hacksaw. Other times we can fix up the
young 'uns by puttin' a couple drops of acid where their horns would
grow in, and that stops 'em cold. Still, there are some breeds of
cattle that never grow horns. But the reason this cow don't have no
horns, ma'am, is 'cause it's a horse."

I Knew He Put It In The Wrong Place

A stingy old lawyer who had been diagnosed with a terminal
illness was determined to prove wrong the saying, "You can't take
it with you."

After much thought and consideration, the old ambulance chaser
finally figured out how to take at least some of his money with
him when he died. He instructed his wife to go to the bank and
withdraw enough money to fill two pillowcases. He then directed
her to take the bags of money to the attic and leave them
directly above his bed. His plan: When he passed away, he would
reach out and grab the bags on his way to Heaven.

Several weeks after the funeral, the deceased lawyer's wife, up
in the attic cleaning came upon the two forgotten pillowcases
stuffed with cash. "Oh, that old fool," she exclaimed. "I knew he
should have had me put the money in the basement."
