Preemie Shells & Braids Coverlet
Measures approximately 15x14

The following pattern is my original design.
Please only copy or print this pattern for personal use.

MATERIALS:

Hook: Size G
Bernat Baby Coordinates Yarn

Stitches used: ch, sl st, sc, dc.

Difficulty: MEDIUM

5dc dec over next shell = (Yarn over, insert hook in next double crochet, yarn over, draw loop through, yarn over, draw through 2 loops) 5 times. Six loops remain on the hook. Yarn over and draw through all six loops. Chain 1.
Decrease made.

 


Row 1: Ch 99, 5dc in 6th ch from hook. Sk 2 chs, dc in next ch, sk next 8 chs. Ch 8. Dc in next ch. Sk 2 chs. 5 dc in next ch (shell). Sk 2 chs. Dc in next ch. * Sk 8 chs. Ch 8. Dc in next ch. Sk 2 chs. 5dc in next ch. Sk 2 chs. Dc in next ch. Rep from * across. Ch 4, turn. (right side)

Row 2: Dc dec over 5 dc. Ch 1. Dc in next dc. * Sk next 8 chs. Ch 8. Dc in next dc. Ch 1. 5dc dec over next shell. Ch 1. Dc in next dc. Rep from * across. Ch 3, turn.

Row 3: 5dc (shell) in next 5dc dec. Dc in next dc. * Sk 8 chs. Ch 8. Dc in next dc. 5dc in next 5dc dec. Dc in next dc. Rep from * across, placing the last dc in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch4. Ch 4, turn.

Rows 4-23: Rep Rows 2 & 3 ending with Row 2.

Do not fasten off.

BRAID THE CHAINS

With right side facing and working from bottom of pattern (row 1):
Twist ch-8 lps, starting with first skipped ch-8 on starting ch.
Working vertically from bottom to top, twist the first ch-8 lp counter clockwise forming a loop.
With a crochet hook or your fingers, draw next ch-8 lp through, twisting counter clockwise.
Continue working in this manner through to the last row. Secure last loop with a stitch marker.
Repeat this procedure on each row of ch-8 lps.

BORDER

Ch 1, 2 sc in ch sp. Sc in dec. 2 sc in ch sp. * Work 1 sc through the ch-8 lp and dc to the right of it. Work 1 sc through the same ch-8 lp and dc to the left of it. (this will secure the braid end). 2 sc in ch sp. Sc in dec. 2 sc in ch sp. Rep from * across. 3 sc in 3rd ch to form corner. 2 sc around next st. * Sc in row end. 2 sc around next st. Rep from * across. 3 sc in corner ch. 2 sc in ch sp. Sc in base of next shell. 2 sc in ch sp. * Sc in dc. 2 sc in center of 1st ch-8 lp. Sc in dc. 2sc in ch sp. Sc in base of next shell. 2 sc in ch sp. Rep from * across. 3 sc in corner ch. 2 sc around next st. * Sc in row end. 2 sc around next st. Rep from * across. 2 sc in same sp as 1st sc to form corner. Join with sl st.

FASTEN OFF/WEAVE IN ENDS
