GENERAL NEWS

Dear Subscriber:

I received the following in an email....
something to ponder on for the new year.

Take time to honestly think about your answers to these questions:

1) What do you value most in your life?
2) What would you most hate to lose?
3) What do you think about when you are free to think what you want to?
4) What gives you the greatest pleasure?
5) What do you give most of you free time to?

The answer to these question will tell you what you priorities are, what you are living for.
Think about it.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Don't be God's weakest link!

For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. And since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let each exercise them accordingly; if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches in his teaching; or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give perference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and curse not. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Repect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. "BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS UPON HIS HEAD." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:3-21

Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body (which is the church) in filling up that which is lacking in Christ's afflictions.

Colossians 1:24

And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all.

Ephesians 1:22-23

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:20-21

"THERE ARE NO UNIMPORTANT MEMBERS
IN THE BODY OF CHRIST
."

for you not killing your own children."

CROCHET STITCH or TECHNIQUE

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

PLACE MARKER (PM)

When a pattern says "Place Marker", attach the marker in the indicated stitch or space
as directed. There should be a reference to that marker later on in your pattern.

There are numerous types of stitch markers available on the market today including split ring markers, & latch pin markers. If you find yourself in a project that calls for you to place a marker but you don't have one of these handy... you can use a regular latch pin, a bobby pin, a paper clip or a scrap piece of yarn. Anything that you can attach to your crochet project that can be easily removed and won't damage your yarn will work just fine.

CROCHET TIP

VIEWER TIP
From Janet Ford

Here is a tip to identify the size of crochet hook you are using on a project. It is especially helpful if you have multiple WIPS. You can purchase little tags called tag markers (or something like that) at office supple stores. Some of them have strings attached. Put the crochet hook size on one of these tags and attach to the project. In this manner you always have the hook size with the project even if the project is put down for months or even years. Thank you for all the wonderful patterns, ideas and format of this wonderful site! I am a grandma who has crocheted since I was a child, and love to try new patterns. Would anyone have the pattern for mittens that are crocheted working the thumb in as you go? I had the pattern from the '70's and made hundreds of them, but lost the pattern in a house fire. I have ask everyone I thought might have it, but have not been successful. I make them for the homeless, or school children, or anyone in need. They were a good use of leftover yarn. God bless you and thank you again for this place where you are not afraid to speak of your love of the Lord!

I just found this beautiful site today and I am LOVIN' IT!! So many wonderful and exciting patterns to try, especially the "Dog House". My mom taught me to do both crochet and knit when I was a child. Never was I so engrossed in doing this type of handicraft until, mom passed away 18 years ago. My friends say, mom put her hooks and her hands into mine and I have not stopped learning and doing all kinds of projects since.I enjoy it all so much. Thank you so much for the site.
Becky

I have to tell you about this new book.
SweaterBabe.com's Fabulous & Flirty Crochet
I'm so happy to have it in my crochet library.

Katherine Lee has an eye for style and a definite knack for creating beautiful crochet patterns.
I was really happy with the large colorful project photos.
There's something for everyone!
The aspect of Fabulous and Flirty Crochet that stood out to me was the section on the yarns used in the patterns.
One page shows "actual size" photos of the yarns which makes it super easy to substitute other yarns if you want to.
For those who stay strictly to the recommended yarn in a pattern Katherine has included a yarn resource list.
The projects are very fashionable and perfect for gift giving... though I'm sure you'll have to make something for yourself :o)
I can't wait to try the Flirty Skirt and the Ruffled Strap Tank.

HUMOR

A crew of highway maintenance workers were sent to repair some road signs that vandals had knocked down in a forested area. The first one they put back up was a symbol warning of a deer crossing. As they moved down the road to repair the next sign, one member, a goober, looked back and spotted a deer running across the highway. She turned to a co-worker and said, "I wonder how long he's been waiting to cross?"

While discussing the plight of Driver's license examiners, a former motor-vehicle-bureau director told about a woman who was parallel parking. The examiner asked her, "Could you get a little closer?" Instead of moving the car . . . she slid over.

Kid Wisdom

When your dad is mad and asks you, "Do I look stupid?" don't answer.

Never tell your mom her diet's not working.

Stay away from prunes.

Never leave your three-year-old brother in the same room as your school assignment.

If you want a kitten, start out by asking for a horse.

Felt-tip markers are not good to use as lipstick.

Don't pick on your sister when she's holding a baseball bat.

When you get a bad grade in school, show it to your mom when she's on the phone.

While reviewing math symbols with my second-grade pupils, I drew a greater-than (>) and a less-than (<) sign on the chalkboard and asked, "Does anyone remember what these mean?"

A few moments passed, and then a boy confidently raised his hand.
"One means fast-forward," he exclaimed, "and the other means rewind!"

A boy was having a lot of difficulty in French class.

To encourage him, his teacher said, "You'll know you're really beginning to get it when you start dreaming in French."

The boy ran into class all excited one day, saying, "Teacher, teacher!
I had a dream last night and everyone was talking in French!"

"Great!" said the teacher; "what were they saying?"

"I don't know," the boy replied; "I couldn't understand them."

A small boy was looking at the red ripe tomatoes growing in the farmer's garden.

"I'll give you my two pennies for that tomato," said the boy pointing to a beautiful, large, ripe fruit hanging on the vine.

"No," said the farmer, "I get a dime for a tomato like that one."

The small boy pointed to a smaller green one,
"Will you take two pennies for that one?"

"Yes," replied the farmer, "I'll give you that one for two cents."

"OK," said the lad, sealing the deal by putting the coins in the farmer's hand,
"I'll pick it up in about a week."

When visiting my father at the nursing home where he now lives, I always decline the meals, which tend to be dull and monotonous, an opinion shared by many of the residents. One evening after the trays had been delivered, one elderly woman looked over her dinner, sighed heavily, and intoned,
"Hebrews 13:8."

I looked up the passage later. It reads:
"Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever."

A tall, handsome, confident gentleman walked over to a girl
and made a disparaging remark about the men who had been chatting her up.

She laughed gaily,
"When I don't want a man's attentions," she confided,
"and he asks where I live, I just say,
'I'm visiting here.'"

"Ha-ha," he laughed, relishing her humor.
"Where do you really live?"

"I'm just visiting here."

A little boy went to the store with his grandmother and on the way home,
he was looking at the things she had purchased.
He found a package of panty hose and began to sound out the words "Queen Size".

He then turned to his grandmother and exclaimed, "Look Grandma, you wear the same size as our bed!"

Dave took Mary out for a romantic dinner where conversation turned to the subject of marriage. Dave had been saving for an engagement ring, but he was in graduate school and in dire need of a new computer. Mary was understanding, telling Dave they had the rest of their lives to get engaged, so he should use his savings to buy a new computer instead.

During dessert, Dave suddenly reached into his pocket and pulled out an engagement ring. Mary was stunned, but after she collected herself, she looked up and prompted, "Well, don't you have something to ask me?"

Dave then got down on bended knee. "Honey," he said, "will you buy me a new computer?"

You Know You Live in a Small Town When...

The local phone book has only one yellow page.

Third Street is on the edge of town.

You leave your jacket on the back of the chair in the cafe, and when you go back the next day, it's still there, on the same chair.

You don't signal turns because everyone knows where you're going anyway.

No social events can be scheduled when the school gym floor is being varnished.

You call a wrong number and are supplied with the correct one.

Everyone knows all the news before it's published; residents read the hometown paper just to see whether the publisher got it right.

One day an employee came in to work with both of his ears bandaged.

When his boss asked him what happened, he explained:
"Yesterday I was ironing a shirt when the phone rang and I accidentally answered the iron instead of the phone!"

"Well," the boss said, "that explains one ear, but what about the other?"

"They called back!"

Jack was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. The preacher grabbed Jack by the hand and pulled him aside.

The pastor said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"

Jack replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor."

Pastor questioned, "How come I almost never see you except at Christmas and Easter?"

Jack whispered back, "I'm in the secret service."

A man and his wife are sitting in the living room and he says to her,
"Just so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative state dependent on some machine.
If that ever happens, just pull the plug."

"OK," says his wife as she gets up and unplugs the TV.

Little Johnny and his family lived in the country, and as a result, seldom had guests.

He was eager to help his mother after his father appeared with two dinner guests from the office. When the dinner was nearly over, Little Johnny went to the kitchen and proudly carried in the first piece of apple pie, giving it to his father, who passed it to a guest. Little Johnny came in with a second piece of pie and gave it to his father, who again gave it to a guest.

This was too much for Little Johnny, who said,

“It's no use, Dad. The pieces are all the same size.”
