WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

How well do you know the 10 Commandments?
Click here to find out !

So I gave my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. And I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed and said, "Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His convenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments.

Daniel 9:3-4

And He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?" And they said, "No, nothing." And He said to them, "But now, let him who has a purse take it along, likewise also a bag, and let him who has no sword sell his robe and buy one. For I tell you, that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, "AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS' for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment." And they said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough." And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. And when He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, "Father, if Thou art willing, remove this cup form Me; yet not My will, but Thine be done." Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. And when He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, and said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.

Luke 22:35-46

And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. After a little while the world will behold Me no more; but you will behold Me, because I live, you shall live also. In that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him, and will disclose Myself to him.

John 14:13-21

"NO ONE STANDS AS TALL
AS A CHRISTIAN ON HIS KNEES."

This quote is from Our Daily Bread - November, 2007 Issue.

"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst." Matthew 18:20

CROCHET STITCH or TECHNIQUE

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

SHELLS

There are different variations of the Shell Stitch.

SHELL
A Shell Stitch just means that more than one stitch (such as a double
crochet) is worked in the same space.

Example:
If a pattern calls for a 5 dc shell then you work 5 dc into the specified
stitch.
If a pattern calls for a 9 tr shell then you work 9 tr into the specified
stitch.

DOUBLE SHELL STITCH:
(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st or ch sp.

CROSS OVER SHELLS

You can find shell stitch afghans here:
http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/bev-preemie-cover.html
http://www.citiusa.com/shells.html
http://members.aol.com/SAG55/ashell.html
These are easily adjusted by changing the beginning chain.

I had a large dresser drawer filled with clothes I don't need this season.
I put those clothes in a storage bin and put my yarn in the dresser drawer.
Now when I need a skein of yarn I just go to my dresser.
Hubby thinks I'm crazy but now I can get to my yarn easier!

what does bl stand for what is sc2tog dec sc rev sc can you tell me what these are and how to do them. Kim

<< reply >>

what does bl stand for
Back Loop

Instead of crocheting in the entire stitch which is both loops on the top of the stitch... you only catch or go through one of the loops when you do each stitch.

The front loop (fl) is the loop closest to you.
The back loop (bl) is the loop farthest from you.

This page offers photos of each:
http://crochet.about.com/hobbies/crochet/library/blbackfrontloop.htm

what is sc2tog
Single Crochet 2 stitches together
also known as a single crochet decrease

To decrease you make two stitches turn into one stitch.
For a single crochet decrease you:

SC DEC

a/k/a sc2tog

SINGLE CROCHET DECREASE
(a/k/a SINGLE CROCHET NEXT TWO STITCHES TOGETHER)
Insert hook in next st, draw up a lp, (two lps on hk), insert hook in next st, draw up a lp (3 lps on hook), YO and draw through all 3 lps.

dec sc
I haven't seen a decrease written this way.

rev sc
This is a reverse single crochet.

REV SC REVERSE SINGLE CROCHET (a/k/a CRAB STITCH) A reverse single crochet is worked from left to right; whereas a regular single crochet stitch is worked from right to left. Insert your hook into the stitch or space indicated, then yarn over and pull up a loop. (You should have two loops on your hook.) Yarn over and draw through both of the loops on your hook. This stitch takes a bit of practice but the outcome is well worth the effort.

RE: Shadow's Sweaters

We recently acquired a 5 year old minature schnauzer for my granddaughter. After a really cold/damp day I noticed Shadow was shivering after her walk, so I went out on the internet searching for either a knit or crochet dog sweater pattern. I discovered yours and instantly made it up. Because I was using my favorite yarn - Lion Brand Homespun - which is a bulky yarn, I had to modify the pattern to compensate for the bulk and I used a J crochet hook. We also wanted the band between her legs. So after some recalculations and creativity, Shadow has some new sweaters. I have attached some pictures so that you could see your pattern at work. Now I am working on converting the pattern over to knitting! Thank you for sharing your pattern. BERACAH!! Rebecca

NOTE:

Shadow's coats are all variations of our

crocheted by her owner, Rebecca.

Sorry, individual patterns for Shadow's coats are not available.

Feel free to visit Crochet N More often and/or write anytime.

pattern says Rnds 2-4 : chain 1, turn;
sc in same st and in each sc = around; join with slip st to first sc.
I hope you can help me Priscilla

<< reply >>

Rnds 2-4 : chain 1, turn; sc in same st and in each sc around; join with slip st to first sc.

This means for rounds 2, 3 and 4 you....

chain 1, then turn the project.
Single crochet in the same stitch... single crochet in each remaining single crochet around.
Join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet on the round.

I have to tell you about this new book.
SweaterBabe.com's Fabulous & Flirty Crochet
I'm so happy to have it in my crochet library.

Katherine Lee has an eye for style and a definite knack for creating beautiful crochet patterns.
I was really happy with the large colorful project photos.
There's something for everyone!
The aspect of Fabulous and Flirty Crochet that stood out to me was the section on the yarns used in the patterns.
One page shows "actual size" photos of the yarns which makes it super easy to substitute other yarns if you want to.
For those who stay strictly to the recommended yarn in a pattern Katherine has included a yarn resource list.
The projects are very fashionable and perfect for gift giving... though I'm sure you'll have to make something for yourself :o)
I can't wait to try the Flirty Skirt and the Ruffled Strap Tank.

HUMOR

A first grade class teacher, for the "Natural World" section of her class, had a lesson about owls. She explained to the class about how they are nocturnal, how they can swivel their heads so far in either direction that it looks like they can turn them completely around, etc., etc. Then she described how the birds swoop down to get their prey for dinner.

Following the lesson, she asked the children to draw a picture of one of the fascinating things owls do. Looking over the pictures, she praised and applauded each child on their efforts. She was puzzled, however, by one drawing. It was of an owl with its wings neatly folded, its eyes closed and a dead mouse nearby.

"Exactly what is this showing?" she asked.

The little girl explained, "It's just like you said 'The owl swoops down and prays before dinner.'"

Most people hate to parallel park. The other day, I saw this woman trying to get out of a tight parking space. She'd bump the car in front, then back-up and strike the car behind her. This went on about 2 minutes.

I walked over to see if I could somehow help.
My offer was declined though.

She said, "Why have bumpers if you're not going to use them once in a while?"

A baby turtle was standing at the bottom of a large tree and with a deep sigh, started to climb. About an hour later, he reached a very high branch and walked along to the end. He turned and spread all four flippers and launched himself off the branch. On landing at the bottom in a pile of soft, dead leaves, he shook himself off, walked back to the bottom of the tree and with a sigh started to climb.

About an hour later, he again reached the very high branch, walked along, turned, spread his flippers and flung himself off the branch. Again, he landed on the bottom, shook himself off, went to the bottom of the tree, sighed and started climbing.

Watching these proceedings from the end of the branch were two little birds. Mummy bird turned to Daddy bird and said, "Don't you think it's time we told him he was adopted?"

Q. My shift keys have little arrows on them. Does that mean the *real* shift keys are located above them, and these keys are just little signs to point them out?

A. Nope, they're the Real McCoy. The little arrows mean "up", as in "look up at the screen". Your keyboard is telling you to learn to touch type and quit staring at your fingers.

When sign makers go on strike, is anything written on their picket signs?

My wife and I, both graduate students, recently celebrated the arrival of our first child. At my wife's insistence, we had paid our entire medical bill and were now worried about meeting other payments.

We were discussing our sad financial situation one evening when our son demanded a diaper change. As my wife leaned over the baby's crib, I heard her mutter, "The only thing in the house that's paid for, and it leaks."

The kid was with Santa Claus.

"I wanna have a train, a six-gun, an erector set, a chemistry set, a cowboy suit, a bicycle, a scooter, a catcher's mitt, a set of soldiers, a toy garage with cars and trucks and a heavy crane--"

"Okay," laughed Santa. "I'll look in the book and see if you were a good boy."

"Never mind looking in the book. I'll settle for a pair of roller skates."

The receptionist found some cash in the office, apparently mislaid by a co-worker. She sent the following email: "If anybody can say where they lost $70, please let me know and it will be returned to you."

Within minutes one employee replied, "Kentucky Derby, 2001."

An irate subscriber stormed into a newspaper office waving the current edition, asking to see "whoever wrote the obituary column". When referred to a young reporter, he stormed,
"You can see I'm very much alive, and you've put me in the obituary column! I demand a retraction!"

Replied the reporter, "I never retract a story. But I tell you what I'll do. I'll put you in the birth column and give you a fresh start."

The psychology instructor had just finished a lecture on mental health and was giving an oral test.

Speaking specifically about manic depression, she asked,
"How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of his lungs one minute,
then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next?"

A young man in the rear raised his hand and answered, "A basketball coach?"

Our minister announced that admission to a church social event would be six dollars per person. "However, if you're over 65," he said, "the price will be only $5.50."

From the back of the congregation, a woman's voice rang out, "Do you really think I'd give you that information for only 50 cents?"

While visiting my son on his Army base, I chatted with a colleague of his.
"What rank are you?" I asked.

"I'm relieved to say that I've just been promoted from captain to major."

"Relieved? Why?"

"Because," he replied, "my last name is Hook."

Unexpected cold snaps had destroyed the buds on my father's young peach tree for two years in a row. This spring Dad was ready. He replanted the sapling in a large box, mounted it on wheels, and put the tree in the garage whenever the temperature dropped. One warm April day Dad was wheeling the tree out into the yard, and stopped to give our dog a drink from the garden hose. A neighbor watched the scene with amusement.

"Frank," he finally commented, "you're the only man I know who walks his tree and waters his dog!"

It was Palm Sunday, and the family's 6-year old son had to stay home from church because of strep throat. When the rest of the family returned home carrying palm branches, the little boy asked what they were for. His mother explained, "People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by."

"Wouldn't you know it," the boy fumed. "The one Sunday I don't go to church, and Jesus shows up!"

A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover.

The little boy watched in amazement and then asked,
"What's the matter haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"

Atlanta State trooper pulls over a pickup truck on I-75.

The driver says, "Bout what?"
