"In contentment and joy
are found the height and perfection
of all love towards our neighbor."

~~ William Ames ~~

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

How great is Thy goodness, which Thou has stored up for those who fear Thee, which Thou hast wrought for those who take refuge in Thee, before the sons of men!

Psalm 31:19

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope for His lovingkindness, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart rejoices in Him, because we trust in His holy name. Let Thy lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in Thee.

Psalm 33:18-22

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mommon. For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor for your body, as to what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life's span? And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these.

Matthew 6-19-29

And because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me -- to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I entreated the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulities, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment, for we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.

1 Timothy 6:6-8

Let love of the brethren continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU," so that we confindently say, 'THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT SHALL MAN DO TO ME?"

Hebrews 13:1-6

CROCHET STITCH or TECHNIQUE

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

WORKING IN ROW ENDS

Sometimes a pattern has you work rows of stitches and then to form a border or edging
you are instructed to "work in the row ends". The row ends are the first & last stitches you did on each row.

If the rows are single crochet stitches then the "end of the row" refers to

making the required stitches around the first & last single crochet stitches on each row.

If the first & last stitches on the row are double crochet stitches you work around the post of the double crochet stitches.

No matter what kind of stitch you
are using you work around the actual stitch on the end of the row... not into the top of it.

The first photo in the following picture shows a swatch turned on its side
with the ends of the rows on the top. I used a white cotton thread to work into the
row ends so you could see where the stitches go. The second photo shows the entire
piece with a border added. I worked one single crochet into each row end, one single
into each unworked loop of the foundation chain, one single in each row end up the opposite
side, and one single in each stitch on the last row I had made. For each corner I worked
3 singles so the motif wouldn't curl up.

Re: ReadAPattern

I'm confused at what this means...

Round 2: 2 dc each dc around. (12 sets of 2)

Amanda

<< Reply >>

For the round you will make two double crochet stitches in each double crochet.

The part in parentheses is for reference only.
When you finish the round you should have 12 sets of 2 double crochet for a total of 24 double crochet stitches.

Re: Suggestion/Question

Hallo, I was wondering if you had any insight on rounds. I feel as if I'm really not grasping the concept of how to crochet circularly, and it's quite difficult to make fun hats without that knowledge! Thank you for your time!

Take a look at this video:

where I talk about crocheting a continuous round.

Do you have a particular hat pattern you would like to try?

Some hats are worked in straight rows... like this one:

Re: Double ruffle baby afgan

Hi
I am having trouble with the instructions for the first ruffle. When you get to the corner my instructions say that each corner is compromised of dc ch1 dc. So instructions. Coincide with that.
The corners actually consist of 3 dc ch1 3 dc so im not sure what to do on corners. Can you please explain?
Thank you
Marie Scribani

<< Reply >>

The corners for the main body of the afghan are 3dc, ch1, 3dc.

For the ruffle I am only referring to the stitches in the main corner where extra stitches are placed.
There will be one double crochet in every other stitch around.

Re: BasicsPage

If my pattern says
Ch 2, hdc into each hdc, no hdc into top of ch 2
What do I do at the end?

Live your best life!

Kelly

<< Reply >>

Without seeing more of the pattern I can't be sure... I believe the designer wants you to count the two chains at the beginning of the row as the first half double crochet. Then work one half double crochet into each half double crochet across the row.

Is the pattern online?

Lisa

The Incident - True story about how God works

This is about my Father In Law, James Hamblin.
We asked for and received prayer from many of our crochet family after his accident and during his recovery process. For those who do not know, James fell in October causing multiple injuries which took months to overcome. He is home now and doing well.

This is his story!

A lady had been exposed to strep and needed to visit the doctor's
office just to have her throat swabbed for a culture. She sat in
the waiting room for quite a while with her legs crossed, reading
a magazine while other patients came and went.

Suddenly her turn was called, but when she stood up to go in, she
discovered her leg was "asleep".

Not wanting to keep the nurse waiting, she limped and staggered
toward the inner office door. She noticed one elderly lady nudging
another who sat beside her, as the two of them sympathetically
watched her painful progress .

Two minutes later, her procedure completed and her leg back to
normal, she walked easily back into the waiting room.

As she strode past the two elderly ladies, she overheard one
whisper triumphantly to the other, "See, Myrtle, I TOLD you he
was a wonderful doctor!"

"Has your son decided what he wants to be when he grows
up?" I asked my friend.

"He wants to be a garbage man," he replied.

"That's an unusual ambition to have at such a young age."

"Not really. He thinks that garbage men work only on
Tuesdays."

Brendan had spent a week visiting his family in Kentucky. His
sister-in-law and seven-year-old nephew went with him when he
returned to the airport.

After verifying his seat number with the counter attendant,
Brendan walked back to his relatives and stated that he'd have
to wait an additional three hours in the airport.

"How come?," his nephew asked.

"My plane has been grounded," Brendan explained.

"Grounded?" the little boy said. "I didn't know planes had
parents."

My friend received a package from the Navy containing the civilian clothes her son was wearing when he left for boot camp.

Not wanting to open the box, she put it away. This cracked up her husband, who accused her of being
a sentimental old fool.

"I'm not sentimental," she shot back. "I'm realistic. His shoes, socks and underwear have been inside that box for two weeks, and I'm not going to be the one to open it!"

I heard the dog barking before he and his owner actually
barreled into our vet practice.

Spotting a training video we sell, the owner wisely decided
to buy one. "How does this work?" she asked, handing me a
check. "Do I just have him watch this?"

An archaeologist was digging in the Negev Desert in Israel and came upon
a casket containing a mummy. After examining it, he called the curator of
a prestigious natural-history museum. "I've just discovered a 3,000 year-old
mummy of a man who died of heart failure!" the excited scientist exclaimed.

To which the curator replied, "Bring him in. We'll check it out."

A week later, the amazed curator called the archaeologist. "You were exactly
right about the mummy's age and cause of death. How in the world did you know?"

"Easy. There was a piece of paper in his hand that said, '10,000 Shekels on Goliath.'"

My husband has always had a beard.

One day, he decided to shave it off. He came into the room where my
5-year-old daughter Samantha was and asked her, "Notice anything
different?"

To which she replied, "No" with a puzzled look on her face.

My husband then said to her, "My beard's gone."

Now the puzzled look disappeared and the innocent eyes appeared when
she said "I didn't take it!"

The first morning after the honeymoon, the husband got
up early, went down to the kitchen, and brought his wife
her breakfast in bed. Naturally, she was delighted.

Then he spoke: "Have you noticed just what I have done?"

"Of course, dear. Every single detail!"

"Good. That's how I want my breakfast served every morning."

My husband Ed, and I were out fishing in our canoe. As it was an
extremely windy day, we were using an anchor to keep the canoe
from drifting.

The weather was taking a turn for the worse, so we decided to
start paddling back to camp.

"My" I said "The headwind sure is strong, we're not moving very
fast."

All of a sudden, it was less of an effort to paddle and I said,
"Oh, did you decide to paddle?"

"No" Ed said, "I decided it would be easier if I brought the
anchor in."

Figuring that her four-year-old son Kevin was listening in
the next room, Janet decided to tell her husband Don the
latest Christmas gift she had bought the boy by spelling out
the words "fire truck"

Don nodded and said, "I think it would be a great Christmas
gift."

From the other side of the wall, they heard Kevin yell, "I
don't want letters for Christmas!"

A mess officer was bugged because too much bread was

being left over. Some of the soldiers complained that

it was too hard.

The mess officer said, "If Napoleon's troops had that

bread, they'd have eaten it down to the last crumb."

A young soldier said, "I believe that, sir. But it was

fresh then!"

When my daughter, Brittany, was 4 or 5, she was having some "growing pains” in her legs and needed to take some aspirin. She had the bottle and was trying in vain to get it open while I changed her baby sister's diaper.

I saw her frustration and explained that it was a childproof cap and I would have to open it when I finished.

Eyes wide with wonder, Brittany asked, "How does it know it's me?"
